Situated in the Algarve’s eastern most corner, nestled across the river from Spain, Grand House is a stunning Belle Époque hotel, a revived Grand Dame that received a new lease of life, becoming the first five-star hotel in the historical town of Vila Real de Santo António. The Grand House Algarve is a combination of authenticity, simplicity, and soul.

This immaculately restored hotel, originally built in 1926, has 31 elegant bedrooms, a, bar, cosy decorated room for reading and relaxation, and restaurant overlooking a river and Spain beyond. Its Grand Beach Club, a few minutes away, has a small swimming pool, a deck and delicious Mediterranean fare above a tiny, sandy beach. The 31 rooms (one is reserved for spa treatments on demand) come in muted, peaceful colours. Wooden floors are topped with hand-woven rugs and antique chests of drawers while old black and white lithographs and maps line the walls. French windows and Korrodi’s trademark mullions open onto terraces. Elegant bathrooms with black and white tiled floors and cosy decoration.

Extremely friendly and efficient staff members provide seamless service. Facilities are limited by the size of the hotel, but every effort is made to deliver everything and anything a guest might want.

R O N D A ’ S N O T E S

Where to go: The hotel is right on the main street, facing the River Guadiana that separates Portugal and Spain; a small ferry runs between the two sides. Behind the hotel is the town’s main square with church, shops and cafés. San António beach is a few minutes away by car and neighbouring town Castro Marim is worth visiting for its medieval castle and impressive salt pans. Often city hotels can be a challenge when it comes to night and morning walks (as you want a wee-friendly area nearby). Here it’s easy; right across from the hotel you have the harbour padded wth small grass areas along the promenade. Perfect for the last round before bedtime.

Allowed areas: Dogs are allowed everywhere in the hotel, including the Grand Salon bar and restaurant, off course as long as she/he does not disturb the other guests, and always on a leash. Just an incredible easy dog-policy!

Size n’ shape: All dogs are welcome, no matter breed, size or shape. Amazing right? There is a limit of one dog per room (exceptions may be considered).

Room amenities: In your room the Grand Hotel Algarve staff has prepared a cosy, soft bed and bowls for your stay.

Accommodation fee: The daily rate is 25€ fee per dog. 10€ of this amount goes to a local animal support institution… this we absolutely love!

Dog loving or friendly? Dog lovers for sure. The hotel even as their own hotel dog, the smart Portuguese Water Dog named Grand.

If you ask us: Make sure your dog is trained, well behaved, calm and travel-savvy when bring him/her to a hotel stay. For the stress-free experience.

Last tip: To avoid unpleasant surprises for both your dog and the hotel staff, always use the “Do not disturb” sign when leaving your dog alone in the room, even for 5 minutes.

Grand Beach Club: the stylish Beach Club, a few minutes away, has a small swimming pool, a deck and delicious Mediterranean fare above a tiny, sandy beach.The cosy waterfront restaurant serves modern comfort food with a Portuguese twist, working closely with the local community to bring you the very best of the land and the sea. From ceviche, freshly caught octopus and Iberian black pork ribs to gourmet pizzas, organic salads and barbecued fish, everything is served with an effortless five-star service in a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. Open from 10am - 6 pm.

Grand Salon Restaurant and Bar: The Grand Salon is located on the first floor of The Grand House, with a view of the marina and interior design inspired by the feel of clubs in colonial times. Here, the tastes, smells, sounds and sights of the Eastern Algarve will come alive on your plate. In love with Portuguese heritage, our chef combines wisely tradition with a modern touch. The kitchen works with farmers in the local community to source seasonal, local, fresh and flavourful ingredients.
